Monologues> The Space Between U & I
The premise for this work was to make visible the emotionally charged space between self and other.
Since my 20's I have painted several variations of this theme using a multitude of techniques and art styles.
This version is created by digitally manipulating a found image of a man jumping in a pool in a meditation pose, combined with one of my abstract paintings.
This work is a play on the idea of transcendence and enlightenment and comments on the paradoxical combination of spirituality with lifestyle which we see all too often in contemporary culture.
Apart from making a visual pun or just a bad joke, my intention is to challenge the motivation of this tendency from a pessimists point of view: isn't this quest for self-betterment just a symptomatic effect of our narcissism? Can we ever have a relationship with anyone but ourselves?
